MISSING MAN FOUND
WITHOUT FOOD FOR A WEEK. TRAPPED UNDER BAND ROTUNDA. «_—, «^> (By Telegraph. Press Association). AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Missing since Wednesday morning of last week, Mr Edmund Jowitt, a patient at the Auckland Hospital, was found at ten o'clock this morning under the band rotunda in the Domain, after having been missing for a week almost to the hour. Mr Jowitt was returned by the police to the institution.
Partially paralysed, following upon a recent stroke, Mr Jowitt, who has been a patient at the hospital since October last, has been in the habit of taking short walks in the mornings, returning to the hospital in time for lunch. He was only able to move about with the aid of a stick, and in addition his speech was affected. On Wednesday morning last he went for his usual walk, but did not return for lunch, and at two o'clock members of the hospital staff began a search of the grounds. Failing to discover him the police were notified, and daily for a week police, relatives and from 30 to 40 Boy Scouts have explored the Domain. The search was fruitless until at ten o'clock this morning Mr Jowitt was discovered under the floor of the band rots <da.
He had lifted' a trap door in the flooring, and had been unable to get out again. His speech being affected he could not call out, otherwise he would not have been placed in such a serious predicament. Having been without food for a week, Mr Jowitt was in a weakened condition when discovered.
