TE AWAMUTU CLUB.
MR G. O. JOURDAIN ELECTED PRESIDENT.
The twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Bowling Club was held in- the pavilion on Tuesday evening?,* the president (Mr R. Noonan) «£siding over a good attendance of embers. ■':.•
The annual report (published last issue) was read and adopted. The statement of finances showed that the year started with a credit of £l4 3s lid, and ended with a credit of £6 14s 6d. The principal items of receipts were subscriptions and entry fees £129 15s lid, levy for afternoon teas £4O ss, fixed deposit refund £3O 12s, levy for inter-club days £l2 12s, tournaments £9 lis 7d and £lO 16s, competition entries £9 9s 3d, progressive pairs tourneys £9 Is 4d, card evenings £9 9s 3d, Labour Day tourney £6 16s, locker fees £6 2s 6d, winter playing fees £5 2s 6d, honorary members £3 3s, sundries 14s Bd, total £283 lis. On the expenditure side the chief items were: Ground fees £142 8s 4d, savings bank deposit £4O 12s, afternoon teas £3l 10s 3d, secretary's salary £ls, trophies £9 18s 7d, seed and manure £9 5s 3d, printing and advertising £6 17s 6d, repairs £6 17s 6d, S.A.B.C. £5 8s Bd, scrim £3 18s Bd, electric light £3 ss, insurance £3 9s 2d, paint £2 2s 6d, galvanised piping £1 15s '7d.
Peeling reference was made by the chairman to the loss sustained by the death during the season of Mr N. P. Goodall, and a motion of sympathy with the widow and family was carried in silence, all standing. A similar motion was accorded in respect to Mr S. Clark in the recent death" of his father. The balance sheet showed amounts owing totalling £4l 10s when the books were closed at the end of April. It was shown that the annual tournament resulted in a cerdit balance of £l6 9s Bd.
In a discussion on the balance sheet it was mentioned that the fees outstanding totalled £37, but most of this amount has since been paid. Mr Gee considered the accounts would be more understandable if the year ended on May 31st. The auditor stated that the stocks of material on hand had been written down by 10 per cent as depreciation. The report and balance sheet were then adopted. The election of officers was then proceeded with and resulted: Patron, Mr A. S. Wallace/ re-elected; president, Mr G. O. Jourdain; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Grant, D. McArthur and G. P. Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. W. Gee; green superintendent, Mr R. Metcalfe; auditor, Mr H. A. Burchell, re-elected; delegates to centre, Messrs J. T. North and R. Metcalfe; match committee, Messrs J. Hawkins, T. W. Gee, L. G. Armstrong, and A. G. Weatherell; green-keeper, Mr J. Hastie; general committee, Messrs S. Dowds, W. J. North, J. T. North and R:>Ross; handicapper, Mr J. Hawkins.
The president and secretary were authorised to operate on the club's
bank accounts. It was decided to forego the annual three day tournament and instead to hold at least three one day tourneys at intervals throughout the season, one day to be Labour Day. -The annual subscription and levy . vwere fixed at the same amount as last year. It was decided to hold champion singles and pairs competitions, handicap singles and pairs competitions, and a junior singles handicap. Animated discussion occurred over the form of recognising the help so generously given by the ladies, and though the usual ladies' day on the green was not favoured, the executive was recommended to consider the most popular way of showing the bowlers' appreciation. An entry will be made for the Howden Shield competition, and if sufficient desire is expressed a competition will be instituted between full a rinks for the honour of being the •" club's team. The team to challenge . for the Smith-Clarke Shield will be chosen bjgfi&e Match Committee. Openingrllay was referred to the executive. It was decided that the annual balance take place on May 31st,' instead of April 30th as formerly. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring officers (especially the president, Mr R. Noonan), and to the ladies for splendid support accorded during the past seasoan. —The votes were carried by acclamation. The desirability of further beautifying the surroundings of the playing areas, with flower plots, etc., was stressed, and it was suggested that the club might well co-operate with the Beautifying Society in this matter. The suggestion found favour, and Messrs Metcalfe, Shepherd, Brown and W. J. North were appointed a subcommittee. . ■■ Mr Chas. Bowden was unanimously elected a life member of the club, j amid hearty acclamation. I It .was mentioned that the only 1 other life members of the club elected are Messrs S. H. Dunkley Frank Edgeeumbe, the latter the first, president of the club (in 1903-4.) y. } Mr T. Mclnnes' offer to provide .a board for recording the names of life members was accepted with thanks. = A circular letter from the Dominion Bowling Association council asking for contributions to assist the clubs in the Hawke's Bay earthquake area; to' re-establish their damaged playing, areas was sympathetically received, and £2 2s was voted. .. ? : A presentation "was made to Mr ; fJi Mclnnes in appreciation of untary labour, and he was handed a case of pipes, amid applause.
