INTOXICATED MOTORIST

" TWO ENDS OF A FOOL."

A man in a motor-car at about 5 p.m. yesterday attracted the attention of the local police, and investigation gave them sufficient warrant to arrest him on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle in Alexandra Street. The arrested man was Andrew Duncan Anderson described as an insurance agent, and this morning when he was brought before Messrs G. A. Empson and W. C. Savill, Mr J. Oliphant appeared for him. A plea of guilty was entered, and Mr Oliphant made a strong plea for leniency, saying Anderson would, if convicted, and his driving license cancelled, be thrown into the ranks of unemployed, for a car was essential to him in his calling. The Bench, however, referred to his previous record, and decided to impose a conviction and fine him £lO, with cancellation of his driving license for two years. A month was allowed in which to pay the fine. The Bench remarked to counsel that his client had been before the Court at Te Awamutu in November, 1929, on a similar charge, when he was fined £ls and his license cancelled, the cancellation, however, to remain in abeyance if he took out a prohibition order. Apparently the order was taken out, yet within six months (in April, 1930) at Te Aroha, he was haled before the Court and, treated as a first offender, fined £IQ for identically the same class of offence. Today he appears for the third time. Evidently he is incorrigible, and the Bench must see that other users of the roads are protected from such as he. A man who takes liquor and drives a car is " two ends of a fool," and the present case exemplifies that dictum. The penalty will be conviction and fine of £lO, with cancellation of the driving license for two years.
