"GENESIS" SOLD
MUCH-CRITICISED STATUE
Epstein's statue " Genesis," which aroused fierce controversy and was attacked by many critics when it was recently shown, has been sold to a private collector in England. The announcement to this effect was made recently by the proprietors of the Leicester Galleries where the work has been on exhibition. Discussing the sale, Mr Epstein said to a reporter: " The work has been bought privately and will remain in this country. At the moment I cannot disclose the name of the purchaser or the price given. " The price does not really interest me. lam an artist. If money were my object I should not have produced the work I have. The offer I accepted was one of several from this country." Mr Cecil Phillips, a partner in the Leicester Galleries, declined to reveal the price paid for " Genesis," but, asked if it was over £IOOO, replied, "Oh yes."'
