STANLEY BALDWIN

A charming story about Mr Stanley Baldwin is told by "Peterborough" in the Daily Telegraph. A flagseller, whose pitch was in St. James's, noticed among the passers-by a face which, though familiar, did not at once impress her as that of the Conservative leader.

Hurrying after him among the scurrying shoppers, she touched his arm and asked him to buy a flag. But Mr Baldwin shrugged his shoulders and passed on. Some few minutes later —no doubt realising that it must have been someone selling souvenirs in aid of a charity who had accosted him—he retraced his steps, and eventually discovered the table where the flag-seller ■was standing.'

" Did you ask me to buy a flag just now? "he asked. "I'm so sorry; I didn't mean to be ungracious, but I was in the midst of composing a speech, and I was miles away."
