GLAXO FACTORY TO CLOSE
LITTLE DEMAND FOR POWDER,
We are reliab'y informed (states the Waikato Independent) that the Glaxo Manufacturing Company's b : g Matangi factory is to close down for the season on Tuesday, March 10th, which is two months earlier than last year. The Company's decision will render idle much ear:ier than usual practically the whole of the manufacturing staff, numbering over 30 hands. Only a small maintenance staff wfl be kept oil. Although the Company's supply of milk has been well ahead of previous seasons, it has been necessary to stop making powder as the company's quota for export for the season has a 1 ready been manufactured. The earlier cessation in manufacture of powder will not affect the suppliers financialy. They have been better off in the matter of pay-out than most dairy suppliers in the Dominion, for the reason that milk suppled from now on will be skimmed and the cream forwarded to the New Zealand Dairy Company for buttermaking. The ear'ier cessation of manufacture is a serious thing for the staff, who must now seek other employment, or remain among the ranks of the unemp oyed until September Ist,, 1931. Several of the old employees who are. going off have been employed a" 1 the year round at the factory for the past twelve years. The company's decision is influenced by the supp ies on the market and the poorer demand. ♦ >
