BIG FIRE
FIFTEEN MALIBU HOMES BURN AS SECOND OUTBREAK SWEEPS THE BEACH COLONY. HOLLYWOOD, 16th December. Fifteen homes, mostly of noted picture people, were totally destroyed at an estimated loss of 200,000 dollars by a second fire sweeping the exclusive Malibu Beach colony. There was a previous blaze about a year ago. Beach homes burnt ,to the ground included those of Buddy De Sylva, Al Rockett, David Butler, Marie Prevost, Eddie Grainger, Hal Wallis, Bernard Toplitzky, brother of Joe, Ben Hendricks, Frank Fay, and Oliver Marsh, the latter a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer camera man. All those who were at Malibu Beach helped fight the blaze, but to no avail. The blaze started from an exp.osion near De Sylva's house about 2 a.m. on 15th December. It is reported that De Sylva lost jewellery valued at 300,000 dollars besides his home, and a number of song manuscripts. The only thing he saved was his Hispano car, everything else going due to the rapidity with which the blaze spread.
