MANIAPOTO V. WAIPA. Considerable interest attaches to the challenge match, Maniapoto v. Waipa, to be played at Albert Park next Saturday in connection with the South Auckland Shield, at present held by Waipa. The game is to start at 10.30 a.m. and should last all day. The Waipa team is considered a fairly strong one, and differs slightly in personnel to the team that withstood the recent challenge from Taumarunui. The teams were published in our last issue, and all the selected Waipas are expected to be available. There is good batting strength, while the attack is in hands that have proved capable in club competitions and representative matches. Mr A. J. Shepherd, of Te Awamutu, recently wrote forwarding his re- : signation as selector for the South Auckland representative cricket team. At Monday evening’s meeting of the Waikato Association it was decided that Mr Shepherd be written to asking him to rei-consider his resignation, the trouble having arisen apparently through misunderstandings between Mr Shepherd and the two Hamilton selectors over the selection of the best representative team. The Waikato Association at its meeting on Monday night discussed a letter from the Auckland Cricket Association congratulating Waikato on its success in holding the Hawke Cup and inviting the local committee to send the South Auckland representative team to Eden Park to meet the Auckland Eleven on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28. The opinion was expressed that in view of the amount of leave that the members of the Hawke Cup team had already had for representative fixtures, with the probability of further similar requirements later, it would be inadvisable to undertake the fixture proposed as it would entail players obtaining an extension of leave. It was also pointed out that Auckland owed Waikato a fixture and it was eventually decided, while thanking Auckland for the invitation, to decline it, and to request . Auckland to play a one day match in TJamilton on. Saturday, March 28th. . At Monday’s meeting of the Waikato Cricket Association at Hamilton the secretary submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure showing a total income for the South Canterbury match of £2l Is, and expenses amounting to £l7 Is sd. In connection with further challenges for the Hawke Cup, the council intimated that the Waiapu team was to play at Hamilton on 10th, 11th, and 12th March, with South Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, and Manawatu following in that order. The council also stated that in the event of Waikato defeating Waiapu the local Association would be expected to play not more than one other match for the trophy, preferably at Easter. As the dates set down for the Waiapu match were mid-week ones, the local committee decided that they were unsuitable, and agreed to write to Waiapu intimating that it would play on the Friday, Saturday, and Monday following the dates set down by the council. In order .to raise funds for earthquake relief, the Wellington Cricket Association has suggested to the New Zealand Cricket Council that a special match should be arranged in Wellington between the New Zealand team which is to tour England this year and another eleven. The dates suggested were March 25, 26, and 27. The New Zealand team is due to leave Wellington for England on March 28.
