OUT OF CONTROL
TRAIN RUNS PAST STATION. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WANGANUI, Friday. The South-bound Limited express overran the station at Marton this morning in extraordinary circumstances. The brakes momentarily failed. An ex-railwayman said in Wanganui to-day that the express ran into Marton with her engine whistling signals for brakes. The signalman on duty switched the express into the dead end in the railway yard. Meanwhile the officer in charge, although realising his helplessness, signalled the engine crew with his lamp. The engine crew could do nothing, but the guard on the train, having seen his van rush past the station, jumped to the emergency brakes and the brakes, which were useless from the engine, acted from the van. The Railway Department says the line is always set for the safety deadend, and this gives a run of about a mile. What actually did happen to the brakes the Department is unablp to state until inquiries are made from the dr'ver at Wellington.
