LESS FOR BOROUGH COUNCILS,

(By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday.

A proposal in the Fnance Bill which was not mentioned by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Eansom, in outlining the measure in the House this evening, relates to the apportionment of the net revenue from customs duty on motor spirits. Under the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, it is provided that the revenue, after deducting the administrative costs shall be apportioned as follows: Ninety-two per cent to the revenue fund of the Main Highways Account and the balance among boroughs of 6000 population and over, in proportion to their populations, for expenditure on main highways within their respective borders.

A provision in the Finance Bill seeks to alter the amount paid into the Main Highways Account to 94J per cent, and htus the amount available to the cities and larger boroughs will be automatically lessened.
