UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
PLEA FOR EXEMPTION.
Opposition to the proposal to tax all males £1 10s for the relief of unemployment is contained in the annual report of the Superannuated Civil Servants’ Association. Application had been made to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Labour for exemption, states the report, when it was pointed out that it would be inequitable to tax those who by their thrift had made even a small provision, by payments into the various superannuation funds, for the days of their old age and possible infirmity, while those in receipt of old age pensions, towards the. cost of which they had made no direct contribution, were exempt from the operation of the taxing proposals. Also that many superannuitants were, by reason of their age and infirmity, themselves “ unemployed,” and thus could not reasonably be expected to provide funds for others who for various reasons are out of work. In many cases the total income of a superannuitant is far less than the rates of payment decided upon by the Arbitration Court as the “minimum wage.”
