EARTHQUAKE SHIFTS.
Eecent research shows that there is definite and fairly regular alternating shifts of earthquakes in relation to the equator. In Japan the tendeccy in recent years has been for these distrubances to shift farther north. Seismological records of that country, however, show that in the sixteenth century the shift was southward until 1660. After that date it moved northward again, as it is moving now.
In South America during the same period the direction of the shift relative to that noted in Japan was reversed. The shift of eathquakes in the northern and southern hemispheres is simultaneously either toward or else away from the equatorial line. Apart from their scientific interest there researches will have a practical value, for they should enable seismologists to predict the probable locality of earthquakes.
