SOCIAL EVENINGS

YOUNG LADIES HONOURED. On Saturday evening last, at the residence of Mr and Mi's J. Quinlan, Kihikihi, Miss M. Chapman of the staff of the Kihikihi school was tendered a complimentary Gift Evening in view of her approaching marriage. About 50 friends were present and the bride-to-be was the recipient of many useful and beautiful gifts. Before supper Mr C. J. Murphy, on behalf of her friends, requested Miss Chapman to accept the gifts and congratulated her on the step she was about to take. He eulogised her ability as a teacher and in humorous vein suggested the smybolism of the parcels. Miss Chapman, who was accorded musical honours when she rose to reply, thanked Mr Murphy for his remarks and all present for their-gifts which she said would be a constant reminder of happy days spent at Kihikihi. She thanked Mrs Quinlan for giving her, as she expressed it, “ a home away from home ” and issued a cordial invitation to visit her in her in her new home at Opotiki, with a proviso that all did not come at the same time. Mr C. Corboy replied on Mrs Quinlan’s behalf. During the evening a progressive euchre tournament was played and Mrs J. Anderson proved the winner of the ladies’ prize with Mrs J. B. Hutchinson second, while Messrs F. H. Linehan and J. Wallace tied for the gent’s prize. The non-card players indulged in music and singing and it was near midnight when this very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. There was a large gathering of friends of Miss Iris Adams at the Parish Hall last evening at a party given by Mr and Mrs E. Adams to celebrate their daughter’s twenty-first birthday, and the evening was spent in dancfing to excellent music provided by a party of Hamilton friends. Mr S. Carter officiated as master of ceremonies. After a very tasty supper, Mr J. C. Montefiore proposed the toast of the guest of the evening. He referred in well-turned phrases to the high esteem in which Miss Adams and her parents are held in the community, and wished her long life and happiness. Mr Adams responded on behalf of his daughter, and assured the company of the pleasure it afforded his wife and himself that- such a large assembly had come to congratulate their daughter on attaining her majority. Miss Adams was the recipient also of many individual good wishes, accompanied by tangible reminders of a very happy occasion.
