LAND WITHOUT OWNER
SALE BY THE CROWN.
AREAS IN PIRONGIA DISTRCT*
Part at least of Pirongia’s troubles in respect to unoccupied lands, or actually lands to which no title can be found, promises to be settled in the near future. Mr W. Lee Martin, M.P., for the district, has advised the settlers’ committee that the first block of “ absentee ” sections, amounting to about 90 acres in the east and west townships, divided by the Waipa River, has been put through by the district lands registrar under “ adverse occupation ” legislation. All land not applied for under this form will be advertised for sale, by the Crown at an early date, and it is understood that settlers who have occupied these lands without title will be able to purchase them at about upset valuation. The original titles were granted in the sixties and early seventies of last century to military settlers. Some were occupied and farmed for a number of years, but in the days of the Thames gold rush these settlers departed and never returned. The sections became overgrown with noxious weeds and were a real menace to settlers of neighbouring lands, who thereupon occupied them, cleared the noxious growth and used them for grazing. This decision will be welcomed by the Waipa and Raglan County Councils, which have been deprived of from the lands affected.
