A KAIPAKI ROAD

RECTIFYING A MISTAKE. A deputation from the Kaipaki riding, including Messrs J. Tarr, J. Graham, McKinnon and Sexton, waited on the Waipa County Council on" Monday to ask for improvement to Tarr’s road. Mr Graham explained that eighteen years ago the road was provided in the sub-division of Glengariff Estate, fromed, and taken ovejr by the Pukekura Road Board; but the road was never opened up. Recently investigation was made to secure improvement, but it was found the roadway is really in Mr Tarr’s property. The settlers. asked that the position, be rectified, as at present they have to transverse private land. Mr Tarr wanted the position cleared up. Mr McKinnon had land on the other side the actually has no frontage to the , road. Mr Tarr had purchased and paid for 2071 acres, yet only had 202 acres exclusive of the roadway. Mr Tarr supported and gave some details of earlier negotiations, and said he has for years paid rates and taxes on the greater area. He contended that the mistake was made by the local body, and therefore the cost of rectification should be borne by the county. He had agreed to accept £BO for the land, which was worth a good deal more. The chairman said the Public Trustee was interested, and it seemed that his. office was, at least, as much to blame as the old Road Board. The engineer 'said negotiations had been in progress from time to time, and it was agreed to find the £BO from riding funds if the Public Trustee would consent to Tarr. proacres
