WOMAN KILLED ON ROAD

BICYCLE STRUCK BY CAR. . (By Telegraph. Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, Friday. A fatal accident occurred on the main road near Taumarunui this evening, the victim being Mrs Rita Gannon, who was killedinstantaneottsly at about seven o'clock. She was riding a bicycle in the direction of Matapuna on the main road and was struck by a car travelling in the opposite direction. The car was driven by Mr Gordon Stewart, of Te Awamutu.

Inquiry from various sources this morning indicates that Mr Stewart had visited the races at Matapuno during the afternoon, and after having tea at the residence of an old friend (Mr Smith), he drove the latter's car towards Taumarunui, being accompanied by Mr Smith. The lady was encountered on a level stretch of road, and she appeared to swerve right in front of the car, with the result that she was knocked down. The car was immediately stopped, and examination of Mrs Gannon showed that she had sustained very severe head injuries and a broken leg. She expired within a few minutes. Those concerned in the fatality promptly notified the police, and Mr Stewart is remaining in Taumarunui to give evidence at the inquest, which is .expected to be held, to-morrow or on Monday morning.
