ATTACKED BY A BULL
PIRONGIA FARMER’S NARROW ESCAPE. A very narrow escape from serious, perhaps fatal, injuries was the good fortune of Mr Tom Steel, the wellknown Pirongia settler, at an early hour on Thursday morning. It appears that a neighbour’s bull, a two-year-old Jersey, had got on to the road, and Mr Steel mounted his horse to drive the bull back into the paddock. All went well for a time, but suddenly the bull turned and charged. Mr Steel was unable to get his horse out of the way, and the infuriated bull gored the horse badly. . Mr Steel was thrown off, but immediately scrambled under a high live hedge, while the bull concentrated its attentions on the poor horse, which was buffeted about terribly. The horse eventually got away, and the bull turned to deal with Mr Steel, who had failed in an endeavour to force his way through the dense hedge. A young man named Mounsey was a few chains away, with a motor lorry, picking up cream cans, and he heard Mr Steel’s calls. With a promptitude that was commendable, Mounsey raced his lorry right at the bull, swung round smartly, and received the force of the bull’s attack on the rear of the vehicle. The bull was soon worsted in the battle, and Mr Steel was at once removed to his home. Examination showed that he had escaped without serious hurt, bruises and scratches being the sum total. It was a lucky escape.
