OTOROHANGA NEWS

DISTRICT HAPPENINGS.

RUGBY SEASON OPENED.

(Our Resident Reporter.)

The football season was ushered in here on Saturday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions, and some fine play was enjoyed by a large number of interested spectators. Otorohanga and Honikiwi seniors played under Mr H. Millar. The town pack proved to be too swift and expert for their country rivals, and at the close of an interesting game the score board registered 25 for Otorohanga and 3 for Honikiwi Mr Skinner refereed a rather one-sided game, as Athletic failed to register any score against the 13 put up by the Otewa players. Otewa juniors defeated Honikiwi by 3 points to nil. Mr G. Hyde refereed. In another contemplated junior contest Athletic defaulted to Otorohanga. Mr J. Hetet and Mr G. M. Patrick, of Te Kuiti, met with a motoring accident on the mlain highway three miles south of Otorohanga, late on Friday evening while returning from a shooting trip to Lake Rangiriri. They were travelling in a colsed-in car, driven by Mr Patrick, when it left the road at a well known dangerous bend of the highway, and overturning several times in its downward career came to rest in the gully below. The car was badly damaged, but strange to say both occupants escaped with minor bruises and the shock of the occurrence. The Waitomo Gun Club held a, successful week-end shoot at the Caves, when a record for the club was established, the competitors in the leading sweepstakes all- shooting the possible. There were sixty gunmen and friends present, besides a large number of enthusiasts from Otorohanga and Te Kuiti. In the first sweepstake E. Lightfoot (Taumarunui) and T. Holden (Waitomo) shot the possible, and divided the prize; 12 competed. The second /sweepstake was won by B. Tane (Waitomo) against 11 guns in action—all shooting the possible. The third sweep was divided between A. J. McCready (Otorohanga), G. Holden (Otorohanga) and A. Bellamy (Te Kuiti). The fourth sweep went to lightfoot and Holden, who tied after defeating eight others, while the fifth contest was in favour of B. Tane and C. Holden, who shot the possible against ten opponents. As is the practice of this club, clay birds were used. Otorohanga district sportsmen with rod and gun continue to enjoy good sport. Shooting along the Awaroa during the week-end Messrs A. J. McCready and W. Signal secured seven nice cock pheasants, and a score of Californian quiail. Messrs S. J. Sanson and two other guns secured thirty grey duck on the Waipa river, between Otorohanga and Pirongia. Mr G. Hyde secured six brace of grey duck on the Mangapu stream for a few hours' shooting. Mr R. F. Park, on the Waitomo river, close to Otorohanga, secured five brace of duck, while Mr T. Cumpstone was successful on the Mangaorongo river with nine brace of grey duck. Pheasants were also secured during the day by Mr Cumpstone. Many other parties out during the week-end secured reasonable bags. There is a strong and unsatisfied demand in this district for small leasehold dairy farms. In many such cases the prospective leaseholders are prepared to find the cattle and plant, although this arrangement is not popular with most vendors. A young man named Hoban, an employee on the stud Jersey farm of Mr F. 0. R. Phillips, met with a severe accident during the week-end. He was riding his motor cycle at a fast pace when the bursting of a tube threw him- heavily to the roadway, inflicting a fractured skull and shoulder and other injuries. Dr Gilberd rendered first aid and ordered the unfortunate young man to the Waikato Hospital, where he at present lies in a rather serious condition. Mr J. Boddie, and Mr Primrose, representing the Auckland Education Board, visited Otorohanga yesterday (Monday) and were accompanied to the old school building by members of the Committee. After a thprough inspection of the old school, the Board's representatives left for Te Kuiti.
