BOROUGH WORKS

ENGINEER’S REPORT TO COUNCIL. WORK IN HAND AND DONE. The engineer (Mr W. D. R. McCurdie) reported to the Borough Council last night as follows: — Teasdale Street: The new footpath in Teasdale Street, from Wallace Road this way on the east side, has been formed to permanent level the full width, and sanded to take the pedestrian traffic, till such times as the Council decides to lay asphalt. Private gateway crossings were laid for Mr O’Sullivan and Mr Armstrong, after the necessary £l/ deposit had been paid in each case. All the work is done on both crossings, but the spraying of the asphalt, which is held over until the Council’s plant comes back. Alexandra Street: Minor repairs were effected to the asphalt in front of the new bank, the Bank of New South Wales, just opened in the borough. Sloane Street: Minorrepairs were effected to .the asphalt in front of the Te Awamutu Hotel, where it had fallen in, after being undermined by rats. The presence of the rats has been made known to the health office, that Mr Muir may be advised how to get rid of them. Some of the workings had made holes that were a danger to people entering or leaving the hotel or even passsing by. Some other holes ivere due to failure of the asphalt from other causes than the rats.

Asphalting Plant: The borough asphalting plant and men to work it have been engaged by the County, as the Council arranged. They have asphalted and rolled about threequarters of a mile of the Cambridge Road, and are now engaged in the Cemetery Road. In the meantime the balance of the Council’s men are engaged on footpath asphalting, using the old asphalt. As this material would not spray well on account of chocking of the nozzle, it is put through the concrete mixer,. as hot mix is usually prepared. It is toned down to set slowly, and is mixed with cold stone in the concrete mixer. If given a chance to set properly it should be quite successful on footways. Goodfellow Street: The kerbing of Goodfellow Street has been done from Alexandra Street to the top of the hill on one side, and part of the way on the other side. On account of the Council’s decision to asphalt such footways that are already kerbsd, before kerbing any more, this work has been stopped, and the two men engaged there are now on footway work. Arawata Street: The asphalting of the pathways in this street is now in hand. The old asphalt is being used. The width laid will be full width qn both sides from Alexandra Street to George Street, and on the east side from George Street to the church asphalt. The rest frtom the church to the bridge and from Gibson’s to the Mission gate will be six feet wide. Nothing will be done at private gateway crossings till the money is deposited for the cost of the same. Where crossings are not in use the path will be dealt ivith as if there were no crossings. Water Supply: There have been no complaints of shortage of water in the borough, or outside the. borough, during the fortnight. Most users are doing their best to avoid waste and the selfish abuse of the water system.
