FAMOUS JURIST’S SON
“HAS HIS SPURS TO WIN.”
The British Prime Minister and the King of the Hellenes were among the guests of a dinner recently given by Lord Birkenhead in the Gray’s Inn Hall to celebrate the coming of age of his son, Lord Furneaux, who is a student of the Inn. “I remember,” said Lord Birkenhead, ’’when I attained my twentyfirst birthday; I received, as far as I can remember, one present only, and it was a postal note for £3 from my mother, which I knew she could not afford. That my colleagues should have paid a compliment so extraordinary to my son is moving to me to a degree which I find very difficult to express. “He is going out on a career in the world, and he has his spurs to win. He has to depend for his future in the world upon his own exertions, and his own ability. “He has to realise in precisely the same degree as myself, neither more or less, that he has to make his own way in that hard competitive world which lies in front of us all.”
