EXCESSIVE TAXI CHARGE
PLEA OF IGNORANCE FAILS. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) ■ HAMILTON, Wednesday. "This plea of ignorance is hard to belisve," said Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., when finding a taxi driver, John Langford Muir, 20s for charging a passenger more than the regulation fare. A traffic inspector >» Mr Courtney, • stated that on a, recent evening a young man named Hopkins asked defendant to drive him to his home in St: Winifred's Avenue, Claudelands, a distance of three and a quarter miles. Defendant charged Hopkins Bs, or about 2s 6d more than the proper fare. Defendant admitted the offence, but pleaded ignorance of the schedule of charges. The inspector said the schedule was issued with each taxi driver's license.
