PATERANGI NEWS
EVENTS OF THE WEEK. BIRTHDAY PARTY. A very delightful party was given by Mr and Mrs Mervyn Oldham one night ilast week, at which they entertained all the young people of Paterangi and many from Te Awamutu. The occasion was the celebration of Mrs Oldham's birthday. Not a dull minute was experienced. Two rooms were iclqared for dancing, and many games and competitions caused considerable interest and merriment. Miss K. Macky and Mr C. Rogers won a competition entitled "Parts- of the Anatomy," and a paraphrasing competition was won by Miss Garratt and Miss E. Shaw. Community singing was indulged in, and vocal items by Mr E. Holmes were much appreciat- < ed. Miss Garratt land Mr Holmes played the' accompaniments. Bowls of daffodils) adorned the table, the centrepiece being a beautiful birthday cake. A delicious supper was 'partaken of. In a neat speech Mr G. Finch proposed the health of the hostess, and on behalf of the company wished her many happy returns of her .birthday, and thanked Mr and Mrs Oldham for the jolly evening they had provided. Mr Oldham responded, expressing thanks on behalf of his wife fjor the many beautiful gifts, and assured his hearers of the great pleasure it had given Mrs Oldham and himself to entertain so many friends. The grand ball organised land carried out by the Acme Girls' Club on behalf of the Anglican Church, and held last Wednesday night, was a big success. The attendance was good considering the very unpropitious weather. Thai ball Had to commenec by candle light, asi the electric light gave out while the first dance was in progress. However, it came on again Within a shiort time, and everything went merrily. Much credit is due to the girls, for undoubtedly the hall never showejd to better advantage. The windows and stage were draped with pink curtains; sprays of pink roses trailed over a trellis each side and over the top of the stage; and large bowls of arum lilies stood underneath. The walls were covered with greenery, and streamers of pink and green were suspended from a prettilydesigned centrepiece. The whole plan was well carried out, and the effect was delightfully pleasing. The KitKat Orchestra supplied excellent nuToic, and Mr Mervyn Oldham made an efficient master of ceremonies. A superb sit-down supper, entirely the work of the gitfls, was deserving of all the kudos it elicited, and the Acme Club is to be congratulated on the success achieved. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Paterangi Tennis Club, held on the night of 21st instant. Mr S. C. B. Macky presided. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, and the balance-sheet was presented. The followingo fficers were elected: President, Mr S. C. B. Macky; vice-presadefnts, Messrs W. G. Macky, G. Finch, C. J. Spiers, W. Germann, Norton, H. Rhodes, A. Benton, and Shaw, joint secretaries, Mr A. Benton and Miss M. Macky; ladies' committee, Mesdames Ryburn, S. Smith, A. Benton, and S. Macky, and Misses Finch, Bell, Garratt. E. Macky, Head, Shaw, and Rhodes; men's committee, Messrs White, Finsh, Rhodes, Head, S. Germann, L. Spiers, G. Bowman, Richardson, and L. Karl; selection committee, Mrs Ryburn and Messrs M,acky and Benton; delegates to Waikato West sub-Association, Messrs Macky and Benton. The following decisions were arrived at: That the club again join the Waikato West Sub-As-sociation; that the opening of the season be 6th Oct.; that subscriptions be 15s for men and women, 5s for boys under 16 years, and 2s 6d for girls. The selection committee was deputed to drlaw up rules for ladder matches and submit them to a later meeting. A rule was made that the last player on the courts return balls to the school house). A remit re the personnel of teams in a match is to be sent to the sub-Association. Arrangements i'or an entertainment to augment the funds of the club were ie,ft for the present in the hands of Mrs Ryburn. The unusually boisterous weather experienced recently has wrought havoc with the fruit trees; some- that were a picture of pink and white* blossoms a week ago are now entirely denuded of flowers, and the fruit crop will no doubt suffer in consequence. Although old residents declare that the weather dm-ing the past week is the roughest experienced for many years, no material damage is reported, and, except for a slight dislocation of til:i3 telephone service, no inconvenience has been experienced. In comparison with some other districts we can consider ourselves fortunate. Paterangi breeders were well represented at the national Jersey show and sale held at Claudelands last week as vendors and purchasers. Although the prices obtained were not as high as in former years, those obtained for locally-owned stock compare well with tha prices secured by breeders from other parts.
