HERD TESTING

BEST HERD IN DISTRICT GROUP. Particulars of the leading herds in the year just closed of the New Zealand Herd-testing Association have now been made available, and the figures for the best herd in each of the eight groups in Te Awamutu and Otorohanga districts make interesting comparisons. The best herd in the Hairini group was that of Messrs Smith Bros., whose 62 cows averaged 316.01 lbs fat in 276 days. There were 78 herds in the group. The Kihikihi group had 35 herds, and the best return was from Mr S. Ferguson's herd of 58 cows. They averaged 358.43 lbs fat in 299 days. At Ohaupo (27 herds) the best return was that of Mr J. Bones, whose 39 cows averaged 352.26 lbs fat in 281 days. Mr F. O. R. Phillips' herd of 25 cows in Otorohanga group (29 herds) averaged 362.38 lbs fat in 255 davs. At Otewa the best of the 23 herds was that of Mr A. Pevreal, which averaged 286.48 lbs fat from 36 cows in 275 days. Mr J. L. Macky's. 13 cows topped the score among the 28 herds in Paterangi groun ''and incidentally was the Association winner for small herri 01 with an average of 377.25 lbs fat for 271 days. Mr A. J. Wyllie's 47 cows were best in Te Awamutu group (24 herds) with 308.7' lbs in 260 days. Te Kawa group's best herd (out of 28) was Mr C. McDonald's 30, which averaged 304.98 lbs in 288. days. It is interesting to note that there are only eight large herds (from 350 to 400 cows) in the Association's 60 groups, and of the eight half of them are in either Te Awamutu or Otorohanga district. There is one each in the Kihikihi, Ohaupo, Otorohanga, and Paterangi groups.
