Many matters of varying importance came under review in the House of Representatives, to-day. Principal interest centred in the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill, the second reading of which occupied the House in the evening. The bill was defeated by 31 votes to 28. Against the Bill—31: Armstrong, Atmore, Bartram, Bell Buddo, Campbell, Coatss, Eliott, Field, Forbes, Fraser, H. E. Holland, Horn, Howard, W. Jones, Kyle, J. A. Lee, McKean, Martin, H. G. R. Mason, J. Mason, Parry, Ransom, F. J. Rolleston, J. C. Rolleston, Savage, Seddon, Smith, Sullivan, Veitch, Walter. Pairs—For: Bitchener, Burnett, J. R. Hamilton, Stewart, Nosworthy, Rhodes, Uru. McCombs, Potter, Samuel, Henare, Pomare, Ngata, Jordan. Mr Sykes claimed that he had voted in support of the Bill but that his vote was not recorded. He will raise the point in the House to-morrow.'
