A SAVAGE ATTACK
CASE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. A savage attack on Mrs R. H. Quilliam on July 6th was admitted to-day by William Patrick Leary, who was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. Leary, who was on probation, was employed as a domestic servant bv Mr Quilliam, a well known solicitor. He attacked Mrs Quilliam- apparently with a scrubbing brush, inflicting severe wounds over the eye and a number of bruises. When Mr Quilliam, who was in Court, reached the-house he found the furniture in disorder and blood splashed about the room and passage. An electric meter reader had called at an opportune moment, opened the door and found Mrs Quilliam dazed and covered with blood. He heard someone leave the house. Lear - ' later gave himself ur> to the police and told them while he was talking with Mrs Quilliam his mind went comp'VStelv blank. He struck her several times on the head and then decamped. The Quilliams were the best friends he had had. Leary was visibly affected during the hearing.
