1 -.;king country items. ■Si " A'■ ; ... i; q (Own Correspondent); Captain Wilkinson, youngest son of the late Mr George Wilkinson, the first judge of the Native Land Court, stationed at Otorohanga, is. revisiting his birthplace. Captain Wilkinson is now in charge of the G.P.O. at Cromwell, in the South Island, and is on his annual leave. He is the guest at Otorohanga, of his sister, Mrs H. J. Osmond. As a result of the Paddy’s Market, held on Friday las-t, the Catholic Church funds were augmented to the extent of over £2O. The beautiful dressed doll, which was the medium of bringing much grist to the mill, was won by Miss Naomi Kerr. Mrs Corboy won the dressed fowls and Miss Lilian Quinlan, the cake. Some fine games of Rugby were played on Saturday afternoon. Kio Kio ’.and Athletics faced each other under, the direction of Mr Hunt, and after a see-saw contest Kio Kio proved victorious by 10 to 5. The Honikiwi and Otorohanga junior match produced some goqd Rugby, Honikiwi winning by (k to nil. Mr P. F. Skinner refereedA-Otewa and. Athletic juniors faced’feach ' other under the direction of Mr J. Trapski. This was the most exciting contest of the day, and resulted in a win for Otewa by 17 to 6. A team from Otorohanga played at Otewa an,d defeated the country players by 82 to nil. Mr H. Miller was the referee. A pleasing birthday party was enjoyed at he home of Mr and Mrs H. G. Corbett, last Thursday evening, to celebrate the fourth birthday of Master John Corbett. The Otorohanga Operatic and Dramatic Society are now actively rehearsing the popular drama,- ‘The Pri- ! vate Secretary,” which they will stage here in July. Rehearsals of the opera, “The Country Girl,” are also field regularly, although it will be some months before this can be produced. During his examination of a witness at he Otorohanga Police Court, last Friday, Detective White, upon being told by the witness that he had enjoyed some ale at the home of Mr Milne, remarked: “Oh, you were at Milne and Choices, all Tight!”

As an indication of the extra keen demand for high-class dairying cattle, the clearing sale of Mr H. T. Morton, at Kio Kio, on Friday, returned to the vendor of £l4 per head, for the while herd of 72 cows. The 40 best animals reached the high average of" £l7 5s 6d. Eighteen Jersey heifer calves, made £5 7s, £6 and £6 15s. Som of the best cows made £2O to £25 , while a large number realised from £l6 to £2O. The animals were all "grade Jegseys, and were in fine condition. Had the calving dates \ been available, pur- \ chasers it is certain that even better prices would have been >;■ obtained. The records were destroyed in the recent fire . which consumed the homestead and its con- * tents. Although the winter is now well advanced, the feed is still abundant and succulent, and many herdsmen have not yet had occasion to draw on their winter fodder supplies.
