RUGBY FOOTBALL

NOTES AND COMMENTS. KARAMU V. HUAMAI. Though the Huamai ground is a fair steppast Parawera, the trip was well worth while, the roads being excellent and the playing field one of the best in the Union, though the grass is a little long in places and a couple of small holes need filling for safety's sake. Huamai, on the day's play, were inclined to be ragged, but for 15 minutes put up a strong fight, at timtes looking quite dangerous, Tunoho putting in a good run. Then Cairns shot the ball to Bell, to Young, who raced over to score the first try; he had previously landed a beautiful penalty as well. The Cairns, Bell, Young combination was now working well in flashes, though at times both backs and forwards were plainly easing up. L. Young finished with five tries to his credit, J. Wilson and C. Arthur scoring also for Karamu. Arthur's attempt was a very determined dash for 20 yards, through the result of quick breaking away. Hunapo's first try for Huamai aroused great glee among the supporters, and when Moses put over a great goal Huamai bucked up considerably, Samson brothers being seen in some fine dashes. Namora scored well from one of these, and Moses again delighted the side-liners with a well-placed goal. This man had his kicking boots on, and will need watching in the 25. E. Bell was undoubtedly the best back on the ground, opening up the play well, with Cairns ably supporting him at times. Young's fine performance was largely due to good team work. In the forwards Huamai had some heftv men, but Steele, Howard, and Smith, well supported by Arthur and Wilson at times, more than held them. Nitz, at full, played a fair ganie; he apparently has not struck his true form yet. The Huamai club turned on a cup of tea all round after the match—a fitting end to a game played throughout in a good sporting way.
