KING COUNTRY ITEMS. (Own Correspondent). A team representing the Otorohanga Athletic Football Club made the trip to Pirongia on Saturday and engaged a team from the Pirongia pack, resulting in a win for Otorohanga by 9 points to 3. The visitors were generously entertained'in the evening by th~e~ defeated players. In spite of the colder weather conditions now obtaining, rainbow trout are still taking the fly freely in the waters of the Marakbpa. Messrs A. J. and J. The fact that the Minister of Public works has refused to accede to the request of the Waitomo County Council to make good the damage done to the Hangatiki-Caves road (as a result of the, extraordinary heavy traffic of carting materials for the Hostel at the Caves) is most displeasing to that body. Cr Lee stated at the recent meeting that he considered the Department's attitude was extremely unfair. The Department had an asset in the Waitomo Hostel better than any of the ratepayers of the district, who carried the burden of the cost of the road. The council finally decided to approach the Tourist Department again on the vexed matter. The Minister of Public Works is of the opinion that the matter should be settled between the contractors for the new Hostel and the County Coxmcil. • Otorohanga, Kawhia. Ohura and Taumarunui local body Representatives are still sitting at Te Kuiti, in connection with the settlement of the problem of the payment of rates on Native Lands.

The Mangapu Drainage Board has now been advised by the Minister of Lands that their request for £1 for £1 subsidy is now granted, provided that the Board is able to complete their drainage scheme with this final assistance from the Government. A considerable area of damp, but extremely fertile lands, near Otorohanga, will be cbnvei'ted into high class dairy farms. The drainage scheme, when completed will eliminate all danger of flooding of the Manp-apu, which stream enters the Waina River at Otorohanga. Very heavy rain fell for several hours, at Otorohanga yesterday (Monday) which soon converted the water tables into rushing torrentis, thus giving the streets an excellent cleaning un. Tho weather is now decidedly colder with a breath of winter in the air, and present indications are for more rain.
