KING COUNTRY RATES

ADJUSTMENT EFFECTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). TE KUITI, This Day. The Native Land Commission met the Waitomo County Council last night to discuss the question of arrears of Maori ratds. The total amount owing for the five years ending 1928 is £25,098. On the suggestion of Sir A. P. Ngata, it was agreed to take four years’ arrears and the five forthcoming years, upto 1930, as by that time the consolidation scheme will probably be completed, and Maori land then placed in the same position as European in regard to rating. It is dstimated that from 1924 to 1926 the arrears would amount to £28,0400. The Commission, on behalf of the Maoris, offered 25 per cent of this amount, (£7000), and agreed to pay the county half of the legal expenses incurred by the County in obtaining charging orders against Maori lands, which means another £SOO. The offer was accepted by the county. The Commission is now conferring with the Te Kuiti Borough Council on the same lines.
