A DANGEROUS CHINESE

ASSAULT ON COUNTRYMAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association). TAIHAPE, Wednesday. A young Chinese, Wong Gam Lee, appeared in the Police Court this morning charged with assaulting Low Ching, a Chinese laundryman and fruiterer. Pleading guilty, accused said there was something wrong with his head. Sergeant O'Neill said that accused went to a shop in Taihape and attacked Low Ching with a knife and hoop. Accused evidently intended to throw the hoop over Ching's head and draw him on to the knife. Fortunately, accused failed, and as Low Ching was running away Wong Gam Lee threw the knife and hoop at him. The othjer Chinese in Taihape were afraid of accused and had written to the police suggesting that he should be sent to Porirua, as they considered he was mentally deficient and might kill someone.

On being sentenced to two months' imprisonment in the Wellington gaol, accused said he would probably attack Low Ching again when he came out. Low Ching was greatly perturbed at this statement, but upon being informed by the police that he had nothing to fear he became calm.
