UNFORTUNATE BANKRUPT
A CLERK'S SERIES OF MISFORTUNES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association) HAMILTON, Wednesday.
The view that bankrupt had been dogged by misfortune was expressed by a meeting of creditors yesterday in the estate of Ernest Bongard, clerk, of Hamilton. There were three creditors present and they passed a resolution of sympathy, recommending the Official Assignee (Mr Robertson) to facilitate bankrupt's discharge. Debts to unsecured creditors were shown as being £228 4s 4d, while there was a contingent liability of £777 10s, covered by security estimated at that amount.
In a written statement submitted by bankrupt, he said his liabilities had been incurred through the sickness of his family. When he was earning £3 10s he had three children to support. He had to vacate the house he was renting and arranged to build a house, costing about £buO, on easy terms. He paid a deposit of £5 down. The final cost of the building, however, was £I2OO, just double the estimate. He was unable to carry on for long and eventually secured a release. Further illness in the family followed, and expensive medical treatment had to be paid for. His wife had been under an anaesthetic for operations 16 times, while the children contracted many ailments. During the past two years bankrupt had done extra work at night keeping books, and had endeavoured to pay off back debts. He had been hard press * ed and couM not meet his financial obligations frOm his present salary.
