WORK OF THE MONTH

'OPERATIONS IN COUNTY OF OTOROHANGA. ENGINEER'S REPORT TO COUNCIL. The engineer (Mr E. R. Gould) presented the following report, on the work accomplished and undertaken in Otorohanga county during the past month, to the meeting of the Otorohanga County Council yesterday:— TE RAU-A-MOA RIDING. The usual maintenance and repair work has been carried out in this riding. The unmetalled roads, owing to so much wet weather, are in a bad state. As soon as the rain ceases grader work and necessary improvements will "be undertaken. WHAREPAPA RIDING. Mr Milner has all arrangements complete for starting, his metalling contract on the Te Kawa-Ngaroma Road as soon as the weather takes up. Metal repairs have been effected to the old metalling on this road, and. about six miles have been put in fair order. Further metal repairs are required, which will be completed at an early date. Repairs have also been carried out on the main highway, but the road ,i!s still "pot-holey" in places, and further work will be at once undertaken to bring the road up to the required standard of repair. Owing to so much wet weather the clay roads are all in a bad state, but nothing of a permanent nature can be done until the weather clears. MANGAORONGO RIDING. The main highway through this riding has received attention, and is in a good state of repair. There had been practically no expenditure during the period on other roads, as little profitable work could be done. I have chained the portion proposed to be metalled on Roberts' Road, and fipeci.fications will be prepared and forwarded to the Public Works Department as soon as funds are available A contract will also be prepared for a short patch of formation and metalling on the Mangaorongo Road.. HONIKIWI RIDING Repairs have been effected <"0 the Honikiwi Road, and :t is b'Mng kept in a good state of repair. The recent floods submerged portion.-* of the Waitomo Valley and Otorohauga-Piiongia Roads and wash-d away a little metal in places. Repairs will be completed as soon as the Waipa River is low enough to cart out a few of metal. The old decking on the Waipa bridge is how being covered with 2inch planking, which should extend its life for a number of years. I have chained portion of the Mangamahoy Road which it is proposed to metal, and specifications will shortly !>e prepared ready for consideration by the Public Works Department as soon as funds are available. WAIPA RIDING. The continuous wet weather has retarded metalling work on Barber's Road. Several bad slips occurred on the Waipa River, Puketawai, and Waimohora Roads, but have now been sufficiently removed to re-open the roads for traffic. Mr Kennedy has started his formation contract on the Mangawhero Road, and, considering the state of the weather, a considerable amount of work has been done. The recent floods submerged a considerable portion o fthe main highway and carried away some of the metal, but the road has since been repaired, and is now in very fair order. Metal repairs have also been carried out on the Otewa Road.
