LIFE TOO SWIFT
EFFECT ON xiEALTH. When a man's (health has gone wrong simple practise may or ( may not put it right again> depending upon the nature and extent of the trouble, bult simple practices will keep his health right.
One ha s no control over the health legacy at birth, but one can preserve what one lhas, and use it to the best advantage. Or, on thje other hand, one can dissipate a store of good health by injudicious living. It is a fact that the fir s t twefaty-five years of one llife have a. tremendous bearing upon flongevity, for it is during this period that habits of living are formed, those habits usually remaining fixed and .definite throughout life. It is a fact, also, for all young people from say, seventeen to twenty-five are much the same, that during the latter yekrs of the first twenty-five health habits ar e not much worried over. If one reaches the age of twenty-five in sound .health it is largely up to oneself whether onei lives Ito be etfgbJty or shuffles off prematurely. Modern lite is too swift; therefore, one of the essential things in the prolongation of life lis the cutting-down ,of speed. Violent exercise, violdnt pleasures, violent physical eft* ol ' l on the middle-aged heart may put it under a too sudden strain wiith damaging results; A man over forty-five should not run after trams or tram-cars. If'he must hurry, he should start at a walk, (increase Ms pace until ,he is trotting, and tflien break into a run, if! he mulst. There is not always another train, but generally there is another tram. The insistence upon saving five minutes may result ifn the loss of five years later on. Take care of the present in health matters, and the future will take care of itself pretty well.
