GIRL PIPERS
AUSTRALIANS' W'SHT SCOTLAND.
,An Edinburgh! cbrrje&ppndent forwards the following interesting reference to a party of instrumentalists whfo visited Te Awanratu about a year ago:— . ; ;.-..'•.... ;
"'To the making of a.piper," says Neil Munro, "go steven years of a man's own learning and seven generations before! ;If it is in him then it will comjei out; tif not, let him take to the sword or the plough." (I quote '.'The LofJ: Pibroch" from mfemory.) •But Mr Munrb has lived to see the day when the other sex- can show itself proficient in that instrument. This week theria. arrived in our midst a jp'artiy of eleven women pipers all the way from Australia, who ate to make a toWr of .the country and take part in th\e| Highland games this season. Thtey took to piping, I learn, during the 'War,'dn or/dler'to ibe ahle to welcome home the Sicdttish contingent and they seem to be following it 'professionally.. ,IM, any,raHJe;. they l havei been; |two years on the way. (here, touring New Zealand, the United States;, and 'England. Of cburse, they had''Co visit Sir Harry Lauder at IDunoon, who seems to fcfei .'becoming a sort of patron saint of Scotlandwhille still alive. The girls, who are all ctf Highland ancestry;, though Australian horn, wear Highland costume and'Clan Cameron kilts. iSome oif our'.older-fashioned people may view Ithfeir..visit with some •suspicion, hut since.they have comie so far they deserve "a warm welcome. Whether .their- piping' will stand comparison with that of native masters -.remains to bjei seen.
