UNUSUAL TENANCY

ALLEGED 1 DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. PALMERSTON N... Wednesday. Can the vendor of a property be held responsible for damage done by a tenant prior to the latter’s ejectment by the new owner? was a question propounded in the Police Court to Mr J. L. Stout, S.M. The case, apart from its legal aspect, presented unusual and amusing features. The tenant, between the time of the sale and the time possession was given, had married a daughter of the vendor, who was then naturally diffident about executing the writ for possession she had previously secured from the Court. Finally the tenant and his wife< left, but not before they had dug avp the garden, removed sundry fixtures, including the bath, and disfigured the walls with texts, such as: “The Wages of Sin is Death,” and “Be sure your Sin will Find you Out.” The tenant, in explanation of his conduct, said he wished to make “an indelible impression on the plaintiff’s mind.” Judgment on the legal points raised was reserved.
