CHICKENS BY THOUSANDS

SOMETHING LIKE AN INCUBATOR. When an amateur poultry keeper put a dozen eggs under a clucky hen and eventually he is the proud possessor of a batch of healthy young chicks, he invariably expands his chest another inch or two and all the neighbours are called in to see the new arrivals. One would think that the credit was all his and the hen had nothing whatsoever to do with the business at all. However, his pride must pale before that of the man who can produce over 1000 chicks at the same time and without the assistance of old Mrs Clucky. Probably the largest incubator in the Dominion is at present being used by Mr A. Stubbs, of Fitzherbert St., and it is capable of hatching no'less than 1700 chicks as neatly and accurately as any hen. Incubators that will hold 500 eggs and thereabouts are legion, but so far nobody has ventured into chick-raising on such a large scale as Mr iStubbs. The machine is divided into four compartments so that each may he used separately if so desired, and can be heated by either kerosene or gas. Mr 'Stubbs prefers gas and the cost' so far has only been about the same as he would have to pay to work a 500 egg incubator. The machine is also fitted up with conven•iences that reduce labour to a minimum.
