The mysterious bandit. Uulsee Ruel, knoAvn as “The Man With a Hundred Names and a Hundred Faces,” has been sentenced in 'Paris to four years’ imprisonment and ten years’ “local banishment” on a charge of theft. He Avas accused by the police of having taken part in several murders, and he confessed, to the examining magistrate that he had committed many thefts in the course of an active career in Avliich he had been a painter, violinist, man of letters, officer, “strongman,” municipal official and burglar.

During the war he Avas recommended for the Legion of Honour, and became a sub-'lieutenant of infantry in 1916, but Avas later arrested on a charge of attempting to desert to the enemy. He escaped from prison, and Avas subsequently condemned to death in his absence.
