THE KILLING SEASON
OPERATIONS AT KAITI.
The Gisborne Sheep farmers' Frozen Meat and Mercantile Company's works at Kaiti and Tokomaru Bay stopped killing shortly after commencement of the present month. The returns show that the season from the freezing view point has been fairly satisfactory. The total number of sheep and lambs killed at the Kaiti works this year is in excess of last year's total. Although there were less, sheep killed than last year, lambs came forward in big numbers, especially toward the latter part of the season. Contrary to expectations, the number of cattle killed this year is less than last year. Although a considerable number of "potters" was put through the works during the season the number of fat cattle was consider, ably less than last year, this accounting for the decrease in the figure. More calves were dealt with this sea-' son this being due to the shortage of feed and the desire of farmers to get rid of as many as possible. More veal
was sent out of Poverty Bay this season than ever before. The Kaiti returns are as follow:—: Sheep, 126,331; lambs, 116,009; cattle, 6205; cailves, 4669. The Tokomaru Bay figures are not yet available.
