GENERAL DRIVES A TAXI

A noteworthy act of gallantry on the part of a Parisian taxi cab driver has just been brought to public notice through the Paris Excelsior. Two lad'ies hurrying to catch a train at the Gare d'Orleans hailed a taxi cab for the journey, but when they reached the station about 10 minutes before the train was due to leave they found that they had forgotten their money. They explained to.the driver, who replied, "That does not matter, mesdames. Pay me another time. You must not miss your train.''' But there was a further difficulty, for the ladies were unable to buy their tickets. Again. the taxi driver reassured them, for, having asked their destination and the class by which they wished to travel, he carried their luggage to the train and purchased ticltets for them. The ladies began to protest that he was overwhelming them with his kindness, but he simply pointed out that it was a small thing and reminded them that there was no time to Hose if they meant to catch the train. So they asked for his name in order that they might repay him at the earliest opportunity. The courteous taxi driver handed them a card on which the name of "General Count X.," who was attached to General, Headquarters during the war, figured above a humble address in Paris. He added apologetically that one mast earn a living, and that he found his new mode of life not too unpleasant, once he had accustomed himself to it.
