GERMAN BUTTER IMPORTS

MAIN SUPPLY FROM DENMARK.

Since 17th August, 1925, the German import duty on butter has been M. 22.50 per 100 kg, and this rate is to stand unaltered until 31st August next. From Ist September the duty is fixed to M. 30 per 100 kg, and this advanced rate will take effect automatically unless the Government decides otherwise. The Government is authorised to make alterations in the taxes, and can prevent the advance fixed, for Ist September, and can even lower the present rate if it be found advisable. The German importers of foreign butters are doing their utmost to influence the Government, so as to at any rate prevent the higher import duty to come in force, and they are not quite without hope of getting the M. 225 import duty somewhat reduced, Tlieir organisation is watching the development of affairs with the keenest attention.

The imports of butter into Germany in the last two years have been as follow: In 1924 53,477 tons, in 1925 96,613 tons. Of the total imports in 1925 27,674 tons came from Holland (1924, .20,366 tons), and 34, 1 557 tons from Denmark; while the remainder came from various countries, and also overseas (Australia, Argentina, etc). In the years 1911 to 1913 the average imports of butter into Germany we*s 55,290 tons, and at that time more than one half of the whole quantity came from Siberia.
