A FARMERS’ CLUB
The Matamata Record comments as follows concerning the establishment of a farmers’ club in Matamata:— The talk of secession by the Matamata branch from the NeAV Zealand Farmers’, Union, and the forming of a purely local farmers’ club, ha.s eA r i-
-dently geared the provincial executive, for if has decided to make a rally of the district. If the rally is not going
to have more permanent success than .such a course has had in Matamata and other parts, of the Dominion in past years, it Avill not be Avorth while getting excited about. The full subscription per member is 30s per annum of which 25s goes to the parent part of the organisation only 5s belong retained locally. One Avould think that a great (leal more Avork and play
■cjoiild be got out of a subscription £1 to a local club, the whole of the
amount being retained locally. It might then be possible to find a- secretary’s sa'ary for a start, and to pay
a charwoman to clean the hall, and to provide another two or three chairs *4or the use of officials of organisations that use the Farmers’ Hall. Yes, the money would certainly be more useful' in Matamata. AiS for
bringing pressure to bear upon powers * that be outside the branch has generally fared very welt Avhen paddling its own canoe, Avithout getting the Union on:r into'the splash at all.
