YEARLING BULL MAKES 180GN-S
The fifth annual sale of young stock at Messrs Ranstead Bros.’ well known Matangi stud of pedigree Milking •Shorthorns was held on Wednesday. The attendance of breeders was particularly large, but except in the cases of a few special animals, bidding was ijot particularly brisk. Chief interest Centred in a splendid, yearling bull, a son of that wonderful producer, Matangi Quality 4th, which gave 978.471 b. fat as a senior 4 year old, but whidii, unfortunately, died this time last year after giving birth to twins, one of which, of course, was the youngster paraded on' Wednesday. Bidding on this choice specimen started at 50gns. rising quickly to ISOgns., at which figure he was knocked down fb Mr G. D. Hall, of Kio Kio. Another yearling bull realised lOogns., and' two others 90gns and 69gns respectively, the average for the first six lots sold being a little over 86gns. After that, howeverever, the demand fell off, and a number of young bulls were eitlher sold cheaply or passed in altogether. The average for. 15 was about 441gns. The yearling heifers did not find a very ready market, t)he average for the nine sold, being 20gns. Two of the bulls were purchased for Waikeria Reformatory, one at 48 gns. and the other at 15gns.
