WHEAT YIELDS
ESTIMATED AT 5,000,000 BUSHELS.
During the controversy on the wheat question a good deal has been said about tlhe shortage of wheat in the Dominion this year, and perhaps the impression has been gained that the country will be faced, with a difficult problem in supplying her requirements. At one time last year, when unusually wet weather was preventing the sowing of wheat, it was thought that the deficiency in the wheat harvest tlhis year would be very large, and even when the farmers went in fairly extensivelyy for latesown wheat it was 'predicted that these crops would not turn out at all well. The returns, however, are showing that the late crops have yielded remarkably well. A few weeks ago it was estimated that the total yield of wheat in the Dominion this year would be 4,600,000 bushels, but the later returns 'have increased the average yield per acre. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. 0. J. Hawken, has estimated the yield at 5,500,000 bushels, but 'this is probably on the high side. A more correct estimate would probably be 5,000,000 bushels, says "Rusticus" in the Otago Daily Times.
