SHIPMENT OF CATTLE
The Australian Meat Council advises receipt of particulars regarding a shipment of 235 live bullocks to England from South Africa,‘chiefly polled Angus, Hereford, and Afrikander cattle, says an Australian correspondent. It was reported as showing a considerable improvement compared with previous shipments, from South Africa. The cattle were entrained at Bulawayo on June 11th for Capetown (a distance of 1730 miles) at which point they arrived on June 19th. From there they were shipped by the Cowdar Castle and landed at Liverpool on July 15th. No special accommodation or facilities were provided for the transport from Bulawayo to Capetown, and on the ship they were carried in the ’tween decks. The feed supplied for the voyage was lucerne, veldt grass, and mealie meal (crushed Indian corn). The latter, however, the cattle would not eat, preferring the natural diet. Definite figures of transport costs not being available, it is estimated the total cost between Bulawayo, and Liverpool, was between £l7 and £lB per head. The average weight of the dressed carcass was 6441 b., price realised, including hide and offal, 9d to 91d per lb., so that the net return to the producer in South Africa was somewhere in the vicinity of £8 per head.
