BIG GROUP OF SUN SPOTS

DOES IT MEAN BETTER WEATHER?

A marked increase in solar activity is reported 'by Mr G. V. Hudson, of Karori ('Wellington). Mr Hudson remarks: “A very extensive group of sun spots is now visible near the eastern limb of the sun, and is favourably placed for observation during the early part of next week. There has been great activity for some time past, and the sun’s disc has not been clear of sun spots since 17tli August.” Considerable prominence has been given of late to theories that the weather is very closely connected with the activity of the sun, the latest idea being that t a period of low activity with few sun spots is followed at an interval by a fall in the temperature of the earth’s oceans, which in turn causes poor summers and severe winters. Similarly it is contended that increased solar activity with many sun spots is a forerunner of better weather conditions all round, but at precisely what interval after the sun spots the better weather may be expected is a point on which the rival expeits are far from agreeing.
