THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

REFORM SWEEPS THE COUNTRY.

AN UNPARALLELED VICTORY. BOTH LABOUR AND NATIONAL PARTIES ROUTED. The figures that came to hand at intervals during last night made it increasingly evident that there had been a remarkable victory for the forces constituting the Government of the Dominion, headed by the Hon. J. Gordon Coates. By 11 p.m. the Government had decisively won the contest, for, whereas their declared supporters numbered 25, Labourites and Nationalists aggregated only 15. An hour later the figures were approximately 327 —8; while by 1.30 a.m. Reforms total had grown to 42, and those of the combined Opposition were only 17. Reform is credited with the Gisborne and Dunedin Central seats, for Mr Lysnar stood as an Independent Reformer, while the Hon. C. E. Statham (the late Speaker) stood as an Independent, but as he was appointed to the office of Speaker by the Reform Government it is but fair to class him among the Reformers. When the final figures, so far as they were ascertainable, were checked the parties stood as under: REFORM 57 NATIONAL ... 10 LABOUR 13 These figures credit Sir Joseph Ward to the National Party, and the Maori members are counted —three to the Government and one to the Nationalists. It will be seen that the Labour Party becomes the official Opposition in the next Parliament.
