VARIOUS ITEMS. The valedictory social to the Rev. J D McFarlane, organised by the Presbyterian Church members, has. now developed into a general public ~ movement, and will take place at the. Town Hall on Wednesday evening next. Mr McFarlane has earned the respect and goodwill of all. classes, and denominations of the district, and sympathisers with the movement are expected to be present from Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, and Hamilton. Subscription lists are out and are being donated to by all denominations, it having been decided, to make the rev.: gentleman a presentation. The proposed temporary supply of. light and power from the Government high-power line to Otorohanga township is doubtful, as the Public Works Department suggests that the supply here be delayed until the change-over at Te Kuiti takes place, which probably means in about six months' time "Concerto" writes as Allows: 1 notice certain results of tests of different shingles as to suitability for making concrete poles for the Power Board _ published in your columns. I have a fad as far as Waipa .River shingle is. concerned, and have carried out several private tests-thereof in respect to concrete, and have always obtained ~ much higher results in regard to its breaking strain than those obtained by an official of the Power Board. I would suggest that a Government test be obtained of all the different shingles~~before any decision is come to in the matter." ; • The sitting of the Magistrate s Court here on Wednesday next will be presided over by justices of the peace, the magistrate (Mr F. W. Platts) not being able to fit the sitting into his itinerary. -
