BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR SEASON

For the first time this year butter is this week quoted on the London market at more than 200 s per cwt. Advices received on Wednesday recorded that butter was quoted in London at 200 s to 202 s per cwt. This is equal to about Is 7Jd to ls7£d per lb. .f.o.b at Auckland.

'The average price realised for New Zealand butter last season was approximately Is 6d per lb. In the circumstances the announcement that a prominent Hawke’s Bay factory has disposed of its new season’s output at Is 7d per lb. is an indication that im-. proved prices may. be expected this season.

It is interesting to note that the downward trend of prices on the London market usually occurs in March or April, when the supply from the Northern Hemisphere comes to hand. Last season, after reaching a peak price of about 220 s per cwt. the market showed a downward tendency immediately after Christmas and for a few months ranged between 150 s and 170 s per cwt. At the lower price many New Zealand factories withheld their butter from the market and profited by the improved conditions subsequently. The recent improvement in the London market presages a good time for the early season’s output of New Zealand butter, although it is still rather early to predict with confidence what may occur in the world markets.
