A GAME OF TWO-UP

POLICE CATCH SIX PLAYERS. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) PAEROA, Monday. At the Magistrate’s Court, Paeroa, before Mr J. IH'. Salmond, S.M., this morning, five Maoris and one European were charged with playing twoup at Hikutaia on August Bth. Sergeant McLean appeared for the police and conducted the prosecution. Mr A. R. Gorrie appeared for two of the natives. Pleas of guilty were entered in each case. The prosecution alleged that the game had been conducted at Hikutaia for many years and large sums of money passed. The police effected the arrests as the result of a police trap. Each defendant was convicted and fined £5 plus costs 17s.
