A CAR PURLOINED
BY YOUTH UNDER INFLUENCE OF LIQUOR.
An escapade by a • young man named Hector King somewhat under the influence of liquor on Saturday afternoon last created something of a stir while it lasted. It appears that a young lady motorist had occasion to visit the railway station, and to do so she left her car near the platform. Judge of her surprise a moment or two later to be called, and •Informed that some person had taken her car and dashed up Alexandra Street towards the town. A chase was instituted and the aid of Constable Doyle enlisted. The car meantime had careered through a block of traffic, and when it was overhauled it had come to a stop almost opposite the post office. The youth was apprehended and taken into custody. -He made his appearance in the Court yesterday morning before Messrs S. H. Dunkley and W. C. Savill, J.'sP.. and admitted his faults. On a charge of wrongfully converting a car to his own use he was convicted and fined £l, another £1 had to be paid for obscene language, and a fine of £lO was imposed for being drunk while driving a motor car, making a total of £l2, with a default of fourteen days' imprisonment. The fine was promptly paid and a very chastened youth left the Court. It is stated the young fellow came from Te Kawa on Saturday morning to transact some business and when that was completed he partook of a few beers—sufficient to make him irresponsible and cast about for some means of working off his impulsive enthusiasm. The unattended car provided the opportunity. He can count himself very fortunate indeed that he did not occasion a very serious accident.
